In the Name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful...

As-salamu Alaykum (peace be upon you), and welcome to this year's on-line poetry blog, where you can vote for the best poems in each category. In order for this contest to be fair, we ask that you adhere to the following guidelines:

1. Vote for one poem only in each category: Youth, Adult, and IWA Member (polls are to the left of this page)

2. Do not vote for the same poem multiple times.

3. Do not tell friends and family members which poem is yours so they can vote for your entry. Poems should be judged on their merits and adherence to the theme of IMAN.

Remember that Allah (SWT) is All-Seeing and All-Knowing.

Note: You don't have to be a member of the Islamic Writers Alliance to vote for your favorite poems. Voting is open to the general public.

Voting ends on June 30, 2008.

Don't see your entry?
Contact us at poetrycontest@islamicwritersalliance.net. This may be due an unfortunate oversight or your poem may not have qualified for inclusion.

Iron

Raw from the mountains, refusing to bend
Brilliant red on the horizon
Your strength is deceiving
A moment in the air you burn and rust
Like blood
A reminder that all was created to die
Yet, you wax proud as if there is no end

Or do you desire a blazing fire to cleanse you
Removing what never belonged
Red hot and molten
Flowing without resistance
Completely at the mercy of the Artist’s hand
Like a stream traveling through the mountains
Humble, knowing its course
Your destiny will soon be clear

Why scatter aimlessly in the earth, returning to the dirt from which you rose
Why suffer in the fire of regret, longing for one more moment to die
Why cease to exist when the secret of life dwells within you

Like a stone hitting iron releasing sparks
Your heart waits to be ignited
But a spark left unattended will blacken to ash
And a heart without belief will surely rust

Do you even notice the streaks of white
Beauty and arrogance side by side
Does not silver most perfectly reflect the light
Displaying an image not its own
The white moon reveals the majesty of the sun
To the few seekers in the dark
But most praise only the color red

Shiny silver beneath the rust
Awaken the mystery in your heart
Prostrate like streams returning home
And fear not the stones in the river bed
They are stones releasing sparks
